Royalty free refers to a once off payment to use the music rather than ongoing royalty payments.

Where to get royalty free music as a wedding videographer?

If you are a wedding videographer, you can obtain a royalty free or stock music licence to use music in your video projects. Otherwise you will need to obtain a licence from all the copyright owners of a music recording (composer/arranger, performer/record label) to do so. Stock music refers to music that is available for use, rather than being custom or yet to be written.

What can I do with royalty free music?

What you can do with royalty free music depends on the licence. Typical uses may include using the music for a client’s private video, for websites or social media, in the media (TV/film), or in physical or downloadable products.

Can I use the background music of the wedding ceremony as the music in my wedding video?

If there is music played in the wedding, you will still need permission and licence from all the copyright owners of the music, to allow you to use the music in a video. Alternatively, you can purchase royalty free music to use as background music for your video videos.

What is royalty free music?

A royalty free music licence allows you to pay for the music one time, rather than ongoing payments, and allows you to use it according to the terms of that licence.

The term "stock music" is also often used to refer to “royalty free” music and refers to that fact that a music is already created and in stock, as opposed to being custom written.

Does royalty free mean copyright free?

No. Royalty free refers to the once off purchase of music to use it according to the licence terms, rather than ongoing royalty payments for it. The copyright of the music remains with the composer/arranger of the music, and creator/owner of the musical recording.

Do I need to give credit for royalty free music?

The licence terms for royalty free music will usually state if you are required to give credit to or attribute the copyright holders (writer/arranger, performer) of the music. If there is a space for credits in your end product (eg credits section of a video, TV show, etc), then you may provide credit there, even if you are not required to do so. Since copyright remains with the writer and performer of the musical work, you should not claim that you own the copyright to the music.

With royalty free music, do I need to pay performance rights organization (pro) fees?

PRO (performance rights organization) fees are paid by music venues, pubic venues, TV and radio stations, and streaming services, to play music. If your video is used in these situations, it is the venue or network that will pay performance rights organization fees to the PRO.

Why use royalty free music for wedding videos?

Royalty free wedding is often especially written, arranged, and created for use in wedding videos. In addition, it is often easier to purchase royalty free music, rather than obtaining permission and licence from copyright holders of a piece of music to use the music in a video.

As a wedding videographer, create videos for your clients, or to showcase your work as a professional videographer, or both. Simply select the licence type for what you require.
